Major Astrological Transits of 2018 by Emily Todd
We began 2018 with a full supermoon in Cancer on January 1st. Cancer is about home, nurturing, family and sensitivity- marking an emotional beginning to the year. This moon also highlights the elements of water (Cancer) and earth (Capricorn), a theme this coming year.
Right on the heels of this full moon, Uranus stations direct at 24◦ Aries on January 2nd. When Uranus (or any planet) stations direct, its energies are highlighted- abrupt, sudden and unexpected energy is in the air. This also marks a period of 2 months where all planets are moving in direct motion. This means that there is a focus on external output- we may feel like we are more out in the world, taking more action and energies are flowing at a steady pace during this time. There is a feeling of overall extroversion when all planets direct- the first two months of the year may be a busy time for the collective!
However - in 2018 we will have all 5 outer planets in earth or water signs- Jupiter in Scorpio, Saturn in Capricorn, Uranus in Taurus (as of May 16), Neptune in Pisces and Pluto in Capricorn. Earth and water are both feminine elements- in astrology these signs are more receptive and introspective- indicating that overall, this year is more about slow, steady growth (especially with the earth element emphasized) than fast action and quick decisions. With these energies it is a good time to get quiet, listen, and be clear with what you are building as the year progresses.
Earth energy is good for manifestation and stable progress on the physical plane, but it is also the slowest moving element. Be aware that seeds you plant may take longer than you expect to blossom but if they are built on a stable foundation they will thrive. Earth energy helps us get grounded and build supportive structures for ourselves. If the last couple of years have felt chaotic for you, this will be a welcome change!
Supporting this introspective energy are the planetary retrogrades for the year. Many planets go retrograde at least once a year, but Mars and Venus only go retrograde every 18 months – 2 years. This year is their year! Mars goes retrograde on June 26th in Aquarius, followed by Venus retrograde on October 5th in Scorpio. Mars retrograde will have us checking in with where and how we are focusing our energetic output- action, inaction, physical vitality will be getting a tune up. Venus retrograde will highlight our values, relationships, and how to find balance in our lives.
Finally, there will also be 5 eclipses in 2018- 4 in the Leo/Aquarius axis initiated in 2017, and one in Cancer/Capricorn. Eclipses mark powerful gateways for beginnings and endings, so there will be plenty of opportunity this year to let go of the old and receive the new.
To find out more about how these transits affect you personally, you can look at your natal chart to find out where the transiting planets are sitting- find the sign and degree the transiting planet is in, and take note of the houses or natal planets it is connecting with. This will tell you which area of your life will be affected by each transit.
